This painting contains a portrait of Ernesto Cardenal; the white bearded man wearing a beret. Cardenal is a Nicaraguan poet, priest, liberation theologian, revolutionary, and critic of the Sandinista government in its current form. He was Nicaragua's minister of culture from 1979 until 1987. He is ninety years old.
NYTimes article on Cardenal
This is from his poem "Managua 6:30 P.M."
There is something mystical about the red Tail-lights of cars.
In preparation for going to Nicaragua, I've been reading Cardenal's poetry and reading about his life. I'm sure I'll write about him again.
